The Township of McKellar, located 25 kilometers east of the Town of Parry Sound on Highway 124, is a rural recreational municipality with over 15 lakes, numerous rivers, miles of groomed snowmobile trails and leisurely walking trails. The town currently hosts a summer farmers market and the McKellar Fall Fair.

The 150th Anniversary of the Township of McKellar
This application is for “The 150th Anniversary of the Township of McKellar” taking place in various venues from January 1 to December 31, 2023. The McKellar Sesquicentennial Committee will be organizing one to two monthly events in addition to the main anniversary event the weekend of July 28-30. Programming highlights include: (1) Kick-off Ceremony and the unveiling of the “150 Year Historical Timeline” (January 14); (2) St. Patrick's Day Dance to honour Irish settlers (March 17); (3) Two "Live History" theatre performances (April 15); (4) Family Workshops (mural painting, historical toy making, egg dyeing, pioneer cooking (various dates throughout the year); (5) Unveiling of an Indigenous artwork by Leila Lewis featuring Ojibway performers (June 6); (6) 150th Anniversary Celebration (July 28-30) including a dance, the unveiling of a newly commissioned statue by George Christou, local historical displays, a comedy showcase; (7) Artists’ treasure hunt and art gala (August); (8) Tribute to local artist Bert Weir including the Whispering River Orchestra in Minerva Park (September); (9) Tour of four historical cemeteries with heritage performers (October 28); (10) Seven locally produced WWII short films and historical displays (November); and (11) Lighting of Christmas Lights featuring a choir of 150 singers (December 9). In addition to their regular programs and activities, existing community organizations and committees are also planning special activities or events to officially recognize the Township’s special Anniversary.
