Y.E.S. Theatre 2022 Summer Festival
This application is for “2022 YES Summer Festival”, taking place July 21 to September 30, 2022 at Bell Park and the Sudbury Theatre Centre. The Summer Festival takes inspiration from other successful repertory theatre festivals across Canada including the Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival and the Charlottetown Festival. The intention is to create a cultural hub, with venues within walking distance from each other to allow patrons the experience of world class cultural events as well and contributing to the revitalization of the downtown core in the wake of the pandemic. The Festival will feature three large scale musical works and ancillary programming including smaller cabarets, concerts and presentations of new musical theatre pieces in the development stages. Programming details include: (1) three mainstage productions running consecutively: (i) “The Wizard of Oz in Concert”, July 21 - 24 at an outdoors venue in Bell Park, featuring an 18-piece orchestra and 20 actors; (ii) “Ride the Cyclone”, August 2 - 29, at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. The hit Canadian Musical will be making its Northern Ontario debut; and (iii) “Into the Woods”, September 14- October 2nd, at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. The Stephen Sondheim classic will be re-contextualized as an exploration of the climate crisis; (2) Citizen Exchange Events: free, Ted Talk style pre show discussions that look to provide audiences with greater context and information on the themes and topics explored in the pieces of theatre they are about to view; (3) an artist-led cabaret series where company members will perform their own short cabaret sets, giving patrons an up close and personal look at the artists on our stages. These cabarets will take place at a select number of downtown venues close to the mainstage venues. Cabarets will be each weekend of the festival, after the mainstage musicals to entice patrons to attend another local restaurant or bar; and (4) workshop presentation of a new commissioned work, September 8-11 at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. In 2021 YES commissioned two new musical pieces with the intention of cultivating them towards a full production.
