Organization Description:

Incorporated in 2017 as a registered, not-for-profit, charitable organization, the Sudbury Performance Group (SPG) is Greater Sudbury’s newest performance arts company. SPG focuses on three main aspects of performance arts: comedy, music, and theatre. Current SPG programming includes the monthly “Jokestack” stand-up comedy series; a weekly music series at Trevi Bar & Grill; and a variety of live theatre for all ages at venues across Greater Sudbury. SPG enlists the contributions of over 50 local actors, over 100 professional musicians and over 35 professional comedians annually. The head of the SPG board is Mark Mannisto, former executive Director of Theatre Cambrian, which OCAF supported on three occasions.

Project Name: SPG’s Expanded 022 Season
Project Description:

This application is for the “Sudbury Performance Group’s 2022 Season”, taking place in various venues in Greater Sudbury.

(1) Headliner Concert Series (dates tbd): including: Glass Tiger, The Mudmen, The Recklaws, and Destroyer;

(2) Inaugural “La Musique Fest” (March 14-27): SPG will partner with 14 local venues to offer free community francophone concerts (two concerts Wednesday evenings and weekday lunch time performances in locations such as Sudbury City Hall, elementary schools, and public libraries. Performers include: (i) Edouard Landry (Francophone Artist of the Year at the 2020 Country Music Association of Ontario Awards; (ii) Marc Serré (Northern Ontario Country Music Association Inductee); (iii) (Stef) Paquette, Franco-Ontarian singer, actor and radio host (Laureate of la Brunante, the first Franco-Ontarian winner of the Festival en Chanson de St-Ambroise); (iv) Pandora Topp, a bilingual, multidisciplinary artist-educator, who has performed in theatre, television and film, and has created and toured extensively with many music ensembles, the most celebrated being her homage to Édith Piaf, touring since 1998; (v) Celeste Levis, singer-songwriter who was a semi finalist on Le Voix; and (vi) Chanelle Albert, an independent singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from Sudbury;

(3) Increased Dinner Theatre Productions (over six weekends February and April): “On First Name Basis”; “Who’s In Bed With The Butler”; and “Things My Mother Taught Me”;

(4) Increased Musical Theatre Productions (dates tbd): “All Together Now”; “Avenue Q”; “Rent”; and “No Fences”;

(5) Increased Northern Showcase (dates tbd): a regular showcase of Northern Artists in Greater Sudbury that will feature musicians, bands and vocalists showcasing a mixture of English, Francophone, and First Nation performer. Performers include: Scott Infanti and Steve McArthur (Anglophone); Edouard Landry & Marc Serre (Francophone); Brian McNally & Thea May (BIPOC representatives); Crystal Shawanda (Indigenous); JoPo (Anglophone); TUSH (LGBT2);

(6) Northern Arts Festival (at College Boreal from February 7-27): Eric Johnston (Canadian Stand-Up Comedian); Jellycap (musical performance); and Leisa Way (musical performance); and

(7) The Jokestack (February and April): monthly professional comedy series.
