
Barbara Smith (Stratford)
Barbara Smith served for two decades as CEO and Artistic Director of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYO Canada), the country’s premier orchestral training institute for young musicians aged 18 to 28. Under her visionary leadership, NYO Canada significantly expanded its reach, reputation, and impact, earning national and international acclaim. During her tenure, Barbara implemented transformative enhancements to the organization’s programming and curriculum. These included the introduction of a pioneering injury prevention and mental health program, business and career development training, a contemporary music initiative, an annual two-week chamber music festival, and international tours. She assembled a world-class faculty of professional musicians, conductors, and educators, elevating the orchestra’s standard of excellence.
Under her direction, NYO Canada was repeatedly recognized on the global stage, receiving numerous honours—including the title of Best Youth Orchestra in the World at several international competitions. More recently, the organization was awarded the “Friends of Canadian Music” Award and the Ontario Arts Council’s “Vida Peene Orchestra Award.” Today, nearly 40% of Canada’s professional classical musicians trace their early development to NYO Canada. Barbara’s longstanding commitment to advancing music and the Arts in Canada is reflected throughout her career. Prior to joining NYO Canada, she served as Executive Director of the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra, Director of the Varley Art Gallery in Unionville, and Manager of Arts Development for the City of Markham. Most recently, she stepped in as Interim Executive Director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, guiding the organization through recovery efforts following bankruptcy.
A passionate advocate for arts and education, Barbara has cultivated international partnerships, including a groundbreaking project in India (2012–2013), and frequently speaks across North America and internationally to governments, industry leaders, and educational institutions. She is the co-founder and current co-chair of the International Federation of National Youth Orchestras and has served on numerous government and industry advisory boards. Her public service includes roles as Chair of Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) and Vice-Chair of the Ontario Parents’ Council.
