Michael Herrera has spent more than three decades in service of community. In 2019 he joined George Brown College as their first Chief Financial Officer and led George Brown through its most tumultuous time in financial history through the pandemic and most recent changes in government immigration policy. Over the past seven years, Michael was involved in complex real estate transactions, including the acquisition of 25 Dockside Drive, and the construction of Limberlost Place, the award-winning net-zero carbon mass timber institutional building on Queen’s Quay East. While at George Brown, Michael deepened relationships between George Brown and the Filipino Community – leading to activations with the Consulate Office of the Philippines in Toronto, the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines, and numerous community organizations, including the Philippine Independence Day Council, Sine Film Festival, and Pride House Toronto 2026. In the Spring of 2026, George Brown Polytechnic Continuing Education launched the Geese Project Leadership Accelerator course, a leadership development course designed by Richard Cabellero to equip Filipino professionals with the core leadership skills and capabilities required to lead teams in today’s AI-driven and performance-focused environment. Michael has been named the Global Ambassador of the Geese Project and was awarded the 2026 Golden Balangay Award for Executive of the Year in the Filipino Community across Canada.
Michael has spent a career in service to the not-for-profit sector, having worked with social services, religious, and arts organizations. Prior to joining George Brown, he spent nearly a decade with United Way Greater Toronto. He also held similar leadership positions at the Anglican Church of Canada, the YMCA of Greater Toronto and the National Ballet of Canada. Prior to these roles, Michael was a manager at EY, and as an independent consultant, he supported arts and heritage organizations through the development and delivery of financial and governance training to a variety of organizations throughout Ontario. Michael’s community involvement includes past governance roles with organizations such as Social Planning Council, Toronto Foundation and Ontario Museums Association. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund, Toronto Arts Council, Toronto Arts Foundation and TO Live.
