Organization Description:

Incorporated in 2017 as a registered, not-for-profit, charitable organization, the Sudbury Performance Group (SPG) is Greater Sudbury’s newest performance arts company. SPG focuses on three main aspects of performance arts: comedy, music, and theatre. Current SPG programming includes the monthly “Jokestack” stand-up comedy series; a weekly music series at Trevi Bar & Grill; and a variety of live theatre for all ages at venues across Greater Sudbury. SPG enlists the contributions of over 50 local actors, over 100 professional musicians and over 35 professional comedians annually. The head of the SPG board is Mark Mannisto, former executive Director of Theatre Cambrian, which OCAF supported on three occasions.

Project Name: SPG’s Expanded 2019/2020 Season
Project Description:

This funding is for the marketing of “SPG’s Expanded 2019/2020 Season”, new programming taking place at various venues in Greater Sudbury September 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 at a variety of venues including Kinsmen Hall, Trevi Restaurant, College Boreal, The Taphouse, Sudbury Secondary School, and the Moose Lodge. Expanded 2019/2020 programming will include:

(1) “Sealed for Freshness” (a dinner theatre production staged over two weekends - November 28th at the Trevi Restaurant in Lively and December 7 in Sudbury);

(2) “Northern Showcase”(fall of 2019 to summer 2020): a weekly showcase of northern artists in Greater Sudbury that will feature musicians, bands and vocalists including Francophone and First Nation performers. The line up will include Scott Infanti, JoPo, and Kass Taylor;

(3) SPG Concert Series (dates tbd): potential artists include Canadian celtic rock act The Mudmen, Sean Hogan, Crystal Shawanda, and Larry Berrio;

(4) Comedy/theatre programming: “The Jokestack: a monthly professional comedy series featuring “That Canadian Guy” Glen Foster, WWE Superstar Mick Foley, and “Tales from the Penalty Box with NHL Stars Matt Barnaby & Andre Roy”; and

(5) “Northern Arts Festival” (February 6 - 15, 2020): The Festival will feature theatre, music and comedy programming including the following confirmed acts: comedian Casey Corbin; singer-songwriter Kevin Closs; and musical act Hugh Jazz.
