Organization Description:

This application is for the inaugural “Canadian Craft Biennial” taking place August 19 to October 29, 2017 at the Art Gallery of Burlington, the Burlington Holiday Inn, and OCADU in Toronto. The Biennial event will be presented in collaboration with Craft Ontario. Programming will celebrate the sesquicentennial of both Canada and Ontario and will highlight immigrant, Francophone and First Nations contributions to Canadian craft. Events that appeal to tourists include:

(1) a solo exhibit of recent work by internationally renowned ceramist Anton Reijnders from the Netherlands. Reijnders will also host a four-day master workshop and deliver the keynote address;

(2) a national master craft exhibition including the work of approximately 70 Canadian makers under the theme of “Identity, Sustainability and Materiality”;

(3) “Nothing is Newer than Tradition”, an exhibition of emerging Ontario craft makers exhibition featuring work from up to 20 artists from the Canadian Museum of History’s collection;

(4) “Once Upon a Time”, an exhibit exploring the evolution of the work of 22 Ontario ceramists; and

(5) a two-day conference to be held on September 15 and 16 (one day in Burlington and one day in Toronto). The conference includes 11 sessions with more than 40 presenters from around the world. Organizers expect approximately 350 attendees from around the world.

The Biennale will also include workshops with 10 ceramists, a 10-day artist in residence program for up to six Canadian makers and six curators/writers, and two community projects: the Sesquicentennial Quilt and a community wind chime that will be installed in the Gallery'sd courtyard.

Other partners include: OCADU, Concordia University, The Burlington Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, the OAC, and The Hamilton Potters Guild.
