Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival was founded in 1994 to advance and celebrate the art of documentary filmmaking. Hot Docs is North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market. Each year, the Festival presents a selection of more than 180 cutting-edge documentaries from Canada and around the globe. Through its industry programs, Hot Docs also provides a full range of professional development, market and networking opportunities for documentary professionals.

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival – 30th Anniversary

This application is for “Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival – 30th Anniversary”, a new programming initiative taking place April 27 to May 7, 2023, in various locations in Toronto. Showcasing a diverse selection of new documentaries, the Festival will screen over 200 films at 300+ screenings across multiple venues. New and enhanced initiatives this year will include: (1) Film activations: unique special events around a selection of roughly 10 films. Activations could include food tastings, musical performances, installations, workshops and more. (exact specifics of the films and activations won't be confirmed until March 2023); (2) “A Wall is a Screen”: a free, mobile cinema which creates site-specific screenings of short films in urban areas by the Germany-based A Wall is a Screen. An audience of between 100-350 people will follow the mobile event to various points on the tour, watching a short documentary film at each location. Ontario Place will be among the locations; (3) A new program strand(tbd); (4) “Made In____”: a country or region will be chosen to highlight in its own program strand (tbc); and (5) Podcast Sessions: a larger, multiplatform event for the 30th anniversary will include live podcast tapings, creator discussions and other podcast-based special events.
