Projet
Kent Monkman: Being Legendary
Description du projet
This application is for “Kent Monkman: Being Legendary”, taking place October 8, 2022, to March 19, 2023. In this ROM-original exhibition, Monkman responds to the colonial history of the Museum's collections through a series of thought provoking and, at times playful, installations. This artist-curated exhibition will present over 30 new artworks presented strategically alongside ROM objects. Being Legendary is a sweeping rumination on the attempted colonial erasure of Indigenous experiences and ways of knowing from Canada's cultural memory. Yet, it will also serve as a testament to Indigenous survival, strength, and resilience. The exhibition will include an audio tour which will be written and voiced by Monkman. The exhibition will tour internationally after the initial run at the ROM. Ancillary activities include: (1) Learning & Public Programs (details tbc): The detailed development of the programming will be completed in close consultation with Indigenous staff and community members to ensure all voices are speaking for themselves; (2) Eva Holtby Lecture on Contemporary Culture: (October 2022) with Kent Monkman as the speaker; (3) ROM After Dark themed event (date tbc); (4) Performance Terrace Activities with Indigenous Artists (dates tbc); (5) ROMKids Show / ROMKids Camp Activation (dates tbc); a digital tour of select pieces from the exhibition guided by the Indigenous Museum Educator; (6) Makerspace Activation: family-focused hands-on activities available to members and public in ROM's Makerspace Lab that are inspired and informed by the stories and voices from the exhibition; (7) Cree language workshops; (8) Gallery Engagement activation: activities inspired by the exhibition will be brought into gallery spaces around the museum, and may include the telling of Indigenous Star Stories in a temporary planetarium, Indigenous performances, and Cree storytelling; (9) Indigenous Voices broadcast: digital tour and conversation on the exhibition for adults; and (10) In-person & virtual school tours.
