Incorporated in 2013, Fall for Dance North (FFDN) is one of Toronto’s newest dance festivals. Founded in response to the crucial need to fortify the dance audience of the future, FFDN attracts new audiences to experience a diversity of the best established and emerging dance happening in Toronto, across Canada and around the world. Their mandate is to reflect Toronto’s multiculturalism, create an atmosphere of shared discovery, and entice people to attend live dance performance throughout the year. A democratic spirit underpins the festival concept, bringing a wide selection of top quality dance for only $15 per seat. The first two editions of the Festival attracted an audience of 18,106 and the free master-classes, artist panels and showcase attracted a combined attendance of 1,416.

This application is for “Fall for Dance North 10th Anniversary Festival”, taking place at various venues in Toronto from September 16 to October 6, 2024. Special anniversary programming includes:

(1) International Signature Programme, TMU Theatre, Oct 1 - 2 (a mixed bill of international dance artists). Featuring: New Zealand Dance Co with a work by Maori choreographer and frequent collaborator with Red Sky Performance, Eddie Elliott; three additional world premieres by National Ballet of Canada’s Guillaume Côté’s Côté Danse; Allysa Martin’s Rock Bottom Movement; and Travis Knights’ ambitious tap and aerial work:

(2) “The Mars Project” TMU Theatre, Oct 4 - 6, performed by an international cast of 15 dancers and musicians. The Mars Project is a co-production of The CanDance Network Creation Fund, Fall for Dance North, Dance Victoria, National Arts Centre and Danse Danse;

(3) Anne Plamondon, FFDN’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence will world premiere her latest work at FFDN 2024;

(4) “Convergence”, Union Station TD West Carriage Way, Sept 26 - 28 (an immersive experience);

(5) “Tkaronto Open Indigenous Dance Competition” (Union Station Plaza, September 28): conceived and co-produced by award-winning Indigenous dancer Freddy Gipp (Indigenous Liberation, FFDN 2022). Now featuring Ladies Jingle Dance and Men’s Grass Dance, the Tkaronto Open is an opportunity to partake in an Indigenous tradition that has been in practice for over 100 years;

(6) “Ballet Across Canada”, TMU Theatre, Sept 27 - 28 (a mixed bill of Canadian ballet companies);

(7) “The Lions”, The Fleck Theatre for Dance, Oct 3, 5, 6 (choreographed by Guillaume Côté, world premiere);

(8) “Big Time Miss”, Betty Oliphant Theatre (BOT), Oct 2, 4 (choreographed by Allysa Martin, world premiere);

(9) “Waiting in the Wings No More”, BOT, Oct 2 - 6 (Propeller Dance);

(10) “8 Count”, Ted Rogers Hot Docs Theatre, Sept 29 (Short dance film series, 3rd edition);

(11) “Night/Shift”, The Citadel Ross Centre for Dance, Oct 3 - 5 (three distinct programmes by Ontario-based movement makers);

(12) “The Disability Collective” immersive experience, performed by Propeller Dance who will also partner with Calgary’s National Access Arts Centre for a panel on disability in dance; and

(13) International Presenters Program (IPP) concurrent with the 2024 festival. Held over four days, October 2 - 5, the IPP will welcome delegates (dancemakers and dance artists, programmers, touring agents, colleagues) from across the country and the world to acquire a deeper appreciation for the Canadian dance milieu through showcases, FFDN festival programming, networking, and joining in conversation via panels and discussions.
