The Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village (CTMHV) was incorporated 1959 to preserve and celebrate Canadian transportation heritage by collecting, restoring, maintaining, and displaying modes of transportation. The CTMHV provides access to an interpretive transportation museum and a pioneer village to learn and experience the ways of early living and simpler times. In 2024 the CTMHV will be presenting the Kingsville-Essex Highland Games for the first time, as they had been presented by the City of Kingsville until 2019. The Games have been run successfully by a volunteer committee since 2019 and will now be taken over by the CTMHV. The Games align naturally with the facility’s location and historical ties to early Scottish settlement through the fur trade and pioneer communities in South-Western Ontario. This addition of the Games to the organization’s portfolio will expose a whole new audience to the facility and help stimulate future visits to the Museum and Heritage Village.

This application is for the “2024 Kingsville-Essex Highland Games”, taking place June 22, 2024, at the CTMHV’s 100-acre property in Kingsville. 2024 Programming will include:

(1) Piping & Drumming Competitions: solo bagpipers and solo drummers, pipe bands, and quartet piping groups compete for prize money and grading points;

(2) Highland Dancing Competitions: novice and experienced dancers compete for trophies and medals;

(3) Scottish Athletic Heavy Events: Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation athletes as they compete in tests of strength like the hammer toss, sheaf toss, stone throw, and caber toss;

(4) 5KM Kilted Run/Walk on a scenic course throughout the museum property;

(5) Sheep Herding: Shepherd and sheep dog demonstrate the skill required to corral sheep into their pen;

(6) Mayors Haggis Hurl: The mayors of the local communities compete for the bragging rights of Title of Chief Haggis Hurler by seeing who can toss a faux haggis the furthest;

(7) Tug of War Competition;

(8) Clan Village: With the assistance of the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada, various Clan and Societies exhibit information about their family history;

(9) Artists Village: Artists from the Art Society of Kingsville demonstrate their craft and sell their work;

(10) Opening Ceremonies: Clans and Pipers are led onto the field by a colour guard from the Royal Canadian Legions of Kingsville and Essex; and

(11) Closing Ceremonies: All pipers and drummers in attendance perform en masse prior to the announcement of the winner of the pipe band competition and declaration of the closing of the Games.

Presenting Partners include: Pipers & Pipe Band Society of Ontario, Windsor & District Highland Dancers Association, Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation, and Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada.

Community Partners include: Sun Parlour Pipes & Drums, Sun Parlour Curling Club, The Scottish Club of Windsor, Graphic Gourmet, and the Art Society of Kingsville.
