Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas Square) is a unique focal point of the downtown Toronto community. The Square is designated for use as a public open space and as an event venue that can accommodate events of various sizes. You'll discover a wide range of activities on the Square: community celebrations, theatrical events, concerts, receptions, promotions – events that appeal to residents and tourists alike and provide a showcase for local businesses.

This application is for “Sankofa Fest 2026”, a three-day cultural festival taking place August 21 to 23, 2026. Designed to attract regional visitors and showcase African and diaspora arts and culture, the festival represents a significant expansion beyond the organization’s regular programming, introducing a flagship event with international talent, major stage productions, and a new fashion and creative industry component. Programming includes: (1) Fashion, culture and marketplace (Friday): a marketplace of designers, artisans, and local vendors, alongside programming focused on cultural fashion and creative entrepreneurship supporting small businesses and emerging talent; (2) Live music and headliner (Saturday): live music programming curated with Bammy, De’yah, Steady, and Afrikanah, hosted by Relentless Diaries, with proposed performances by Koffee and Shenseea (both unconfirmed), alongside an expanded marketplace, brand activations, and a potential Yonge Street closure to accommodate increased attendance; and (3) Community, access and creative expression (Sunday): programming with Honey Jam, RISE, and Nia Centre featuring film screenings, a marketplace, live art, DJ sets, and a basketball court activation connecting youth, sport, and community engagement.
