Opened in 1901, the Gravenhurst Opera House is a historic performing arts venue and cultural hub in Muskoka, owned and operated by the Town of Gravenhurst. Originally built as both the town hall and theatre, the venue quickly became a gathering place for community events and live entertainment. Over more than a century, the Opera House has presented a wide range of programming, including professional theatre, concerts, comedy, community performances, and youth outreach while welcoming local artists alongside national and international touring acts. The theatre remains a cornerstone of the region’s arts scene, hosting dozens of performances each year.

This application is for the “Gravenhurst Opera House’s 125th Anniversary Celebration”, a milestone cultural initiative taking place throughout 2026. The anniversary year will feature expanded programming, heritage interpretation, and special performances designed to attract residents, seasonal visitors, and regional tourists while celebrating the building’s legacy as a hub for arts, culture, and community gathering. Programming includes: (1) Headline concert programming: featuring Canadian artists Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida; (2) Expanded theatre and concert programming: an enhanced 2026 season including concerts, comedy performances, and tribute shows such as Acrobat: The U2 Tribute Show, Donovan Woods, The Great Canadian Comedy Caravan, The Comic Strippers, and Floydium, alongside new partnerships supporting live theatre productions during the summer season; (3) Heritage interpretation and historical displays: installation of interpretive panels and retrospective displays throughout the Opera House highlighting key moments, performers, and milestones from the theatre’s 125-year history; and (4) Community market: a local vendor market in Heritage Square outside the Opera House, featuring local artisans and community partners alongside family-friendly activities delivered in collaboration with the neighbouring public library.
