On Monday, October 21, The Honourable Lisa MacLeod was sworn in by Premier Doug Ford as Ontario’s new and first Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. This new title reflects the ministry’s role in preserving and protecting the heritage of the province while celebrating our diverse cultures through support for festivals, sporting events, communities and people. It also recognizes the importance of cultural industries in driving economic impact in the province. Thank You, Michael Koerner!
Farewell and thank you to one of our longest serving board members, Michael Koerner. Michael is the President of Canada Overseas Investments Limited, a position held since 1959. Largely through The Koerner Foundation, which he founded in 1986, he has supported a wide variety of arts organizations in Canada, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Banff Centre, Shaw Festival, and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Along with his arts philanthropy, Michael has supported research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, and at the University of British Columbia.

We are pleased to extend a warm welcome to our newest Board members Barbara Kuker and Emily Trottier.
Barbara is a retired educator with the Windsor Secondary School systems. She has been an active participant in various University of Windsor initiatives, the Chair of the Riverside Library Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the Art Gallery of Windsor, and a member and chair for several years of the Windsor Symphony Board of Directors.
Emily is the Business Development Officer for the City of Greater Sudbury. She has worked for over 15 years in Northern Ontario and in Europe to catalyze business growth with exceptional results. She currently serves on the board of the Greater Sudbury Food Policy Council and the Creative City Network of Canada.

Emily a été agente de développement des affaires pour la Ville du Grand Sudbury. Elle a travaillé pendant plus de 15 ans dans le nord de l’Ontario et en Europe pour catalyser la croissance des entreprises avec des résultats exceptionnels. The 20th imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival comes to a close on Sunday, October 27. Tomorrow, the Festival presents a special afternoon screening of nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, followed by a moderated conversation with director Tasha Hubbard and members of Colton Bushie’s family. One of today’s films, Not Just Numbers follows a group of Aboriginal women in Australia as they take matters of domestic abuse into their own hands. The Australian retrospective documentary Wik vs. Queensland (October 26) exposes the politics of land, tactics, strategies and power of the press, told from Aboriginal perspectives in Australia. Maui’s Hook (October 27) is an original hybrid docu-drama about the effects of suicide for the spirit and those left behind. Check out the full schedule here.

Demain, le festival présente une projection spéciale en après-midi de nîpawistamâsowin : We Will Stand Up, suivie d’un débat encadré avec le réalisateur Tasha Hubbard et des membres de la famille de Colton Bushie. Readings, Signings and a New Podcast Series at the International Festival of Authors
The 40th anniversary edition of the International Festival of Authors brings together more than 200 participants for 11 days of panel discussions, one-on-one interviews, readings, anniversary parties, book signings, theatrical and musical presentations and more. This year, TIFA is returning to Toronto’s Union Station for three free events, and has partnered with the Toronto Public Library and Library Archives Canada on a new archival podcast series titled Writers Off the Page: 40 Years of TIFA. On November 7, the Festival has partnered with TIFF, White Pine Pictures and CBC Docs to present the world premiere of Margaret Atwood: Word After Word After Word Is Power, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

Festival of Arabic Music and Arts Opens Tomorrow
The first festival of its kind in Ontario, The Festival of Arabic Music and Arts is an annual celebration of Arabic music with performances happening in venues across the GTA. The Festival opens on Friday with an ethereal performance by Carole Samaha at Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre. Her repertoire reflects the culmination of a rich journey of arts and culture in Lebanon, and brings us face to face with civilizations of the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans and modern-day Lebanon in Baalbek, Beit Ed-Dine and Byblos. Other highlights include Hamza Namira (October 26), Oumeimah El Khalil (October 27), Naseer Shamma (November 1), Marwa Naji (November 3), and many more.

Premier festival du genre en Ontario, le Festival of Arabic Music and Arts est une
célébration annuelle de la musique arabe avec des spectacles qui se déroulent à
plusieurs endroits partout dans la RGT. Le festival s’ouvre vendredi sur une
performance éthérée de Carole Samaha au Living Arts Centre de Mississauga.
Son répertoire reflète l’aboutissement du riche chemin parcouru par les arts et
la culture au Liban, et nous place devant les civilisations des Phéniciens, des
Assyriens, des Grecs, des Romains et du Liban d’aujourd’hui à Baalbek, Beit Ed-Dine
et Byblos. Parmi les autres moments forts, ne manquez pas Hamza Namira (le

Toronto Biennial of Art: Performances, Walks and a Book Fair
The inaugural edition of the Toronto Biennial continues with an exciting line-up of talks, workshops and performances across the city. On October 25, Laura Ortman performs ROCKS, a selection of scored/improvised compositions for amplified violin, Apache violin, whistles, tree branches, slides, megaphone, guitar packs, bells and tuning fork. Part of the Storytelling series, Walk the treaty boundary of the “Toronto Purchase” (October 27) follows the waterways once used as transportation routes by Indigenous peoples to consider hidden stories of alienation, accommodation, and resilience. At the Toronto Art Book Fair (November 3), guest artists and members of the public are invited to speak about works they have created, admire, or find inspirational.

La première édition de la Toronto Biennial se poursuit avec une programmation passionnante de causeries, d’ateliers et de performances aux quatre coins de Toronto. Le 25 octobre, Laura Ortman interprète ROCKS, une sélection de compositions pour violon amplifié, violon apache, sifflets, branches d’arbres, glissando, mégaphone, guitares, cloches et diapason. Dans le cadre de la série Storytelling, le récit Walk the treaty boundary of the “Toronto Purchase” (27 octobre) suit les voies navigables autrefois utilisées comme voies de transport par les peuples autochtones pour révéler des histoires cachées d’aliénation, d’hébergement et de résilience. South Western International Film Festival Brings International Stories to Sarnia
The 5th anniversary edition of the South Western International Film Festival takes place on November 7-10 in Sarnia. Led by TIFF Programming Associate Ravi Srinivasan, the Festival brings culturally diverse, international stories to the region of South Western Ontario. The 2019 edition opens with Palme d’Or-winning thriller Parasite by Korean auteur Bon Joon-ho, “a comedy without clowns and a tragedy without villains”. The season closer is The Peanut Butter Falcon, winner of the SXSW Audience Award, starring Shia LaBeaouf and Dakota Johnson. The Mark Twain style story follows a young man with Down syndrome as he runs away to attend professional wrestling school. Had your fill of films? culturellement diversifiées dans la région du sud-ouest de l’Ontario.
L’édition 2019 s’ouvre avec le film à suspense Parasite de l’auteur coréen Bon

L’édition se termine avec The
Peanut Butter Falcon, lauréat du prix SXSW Audience Award, avec en
vedette Shia LaBeaouf et Dakota Johnson. L’histoire (qui rappelle
Mark Twain) suit un jeune homme aux prises avec le syndrome de Down qui
