Uprising at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery: The Christi Belcourt Retrospective
The long-awaited Christi Belcourt touring exhibition Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth opens on June 22 at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery! Co-produced with the Carleton University Gallery, the retrospective features 35 of Belcourt’s most famous works. Belcourt is best known for her use of beautiful twining stems, flower blossoms and root systems to symbolize the connection of all life across Turtle Island. Highlights of the exhibit include The Conversation (2002), one of the most popular pieces in the TBAG’s permanent exhibition, and Wisdom of the Universe (2014), voted visitors’ favourite at the AGO. Other works on display include collaborations with storyteller and visual artist Isaac Murdoch, alongside Murdoch’s own iconic images. Did you know? The Conversation is made of dots that Belcourt created by dipping the end of a paintbrush or knitting needle into the paint and pressing it onto the canvas. The design evokes traditional beadwork of First Nations and Métis women.

L’exposition itinérante et très attendue de Christi Belcourt, Uprising : The Power of Mother Earth s’ouvre le 22 juin à la Thunder Bay Art Gallery! Coproduite avec la Galerie d’art de l’Université Carleton, la rétrospective comprend 35 œuvres célèbres réalisées par Belcourt. L’artiste s’est surtout fait connaître par ses œuvres où abondent les tiges jumelles, les fleurs et les systèmes racinaires symbolisant la cohésion de toute vie à travers l’île de la Tortue. Parmi les grandes attractions de l’exposition, il y a The Conversation (2002), une pièce très populaire de l’exposition permanente de la TBAG, et Wisdom of the Universe (2014), élue favorite des visiteurs du MBAO. On verra aussi des collaborations avec Isaac Murdoch, un conteur et artiste visuel qui expose certaines de ses propres images mémorables. The Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival takes over Ottawa’s Vincent Massey Park on June 21-24. The family-oriented multi-disciplinary event shines a light on the contributions of Inuit, First Nations and Métis people, attracting over 40,000 visitors a year! This year’s theme, ‘From the Land’: An Indigenous Culinary Experience, allows visitors to get a taste of traditional and fusion cuisine. On June 22, don’t miss the Long Table Feasts, catered by Indigenous chefs David Wolfman (of “Cooking with the Wolfman”), Cezin Nottoway, Brian Yazzle and others, with entertainment by Silla + Rise and Cris Derkson. Celebrate Indigenous Culture at Fort York in Toronto
Enjoy traditional and contemporary music, educational programming, storytelling, dance, theatre and food as part of National Indigenous Day and Arts Festival at Fort York! This year, Fort York has partnered with APTN to host the Indigenous Day Live concert and broadcast on June 23. School children of all ages will get a chance to learn about traditional drumming, dancing and storytelling as part of the Indigenous Education Days. Visitors can take part in a collaborative mural that explores the sacred teachings of the Four Directions or help transform three canoe ‘skeletons’ into works of art on the Bentway Skate Trail. Film fans will enjoy the 2018 Indigenous Arts Festival Shorts Program, presented by the National Film Board. Also on the program: the Red Spring Singers, hoop dance performance and workshops, storytelling – and more! Two ticketed evening events will focus on Creation and Clan Story Teaching through a special painting workshop and a performance by Brendt Diabo, followed by a session with an Elder.

Cette année, Fort York s’est associé à la chaîne APTN pour présenter et diffuser le concert Indigenous Day Live le 23 juin. Des élèves de tous âges auront la chance d’apprendre le tambour, la danse et le conte traditionnels dans le cadre des journées éducatives autochtones. Les visiteurs peuvent participer à la création collective d’une murale qui explore les enseignements sacrés des quatre directions ou transformer trois charpentes de canoë en œuvres d’art sur la piste de patin à glace Bentway. Les amateurs de cinéma apprécieront le festival de courts métrages présenté par l’Office national du film : le 2018 Indigenous Arts Festival Shorts Program. Stephen Fry Charms Audiences at Shaw Festival’s Mythos

The Shaw Festival is hosting the world premiere of Stephen Fry’s Mythos: a laugh-out-loud one-man show in which the celebrity polymath puts his own modern spin on ancient Greek tales about gods, heroes and men. Presented as a trilogy, Mythos takes the audience on a thousand-year journey, from the creation of the cosmos to the Trojan war. Follow along as Toronto Star theatre critic Karen Fricker covers the show in her three-part diary. Highlights of the first night? Have a Ball at The Redpath Waterfront Festival
The festival that brought us that giant rubber duck is back with another inflatable, larger-than-life installation! The large kinetic piece, called the HTO Pendulum Wave, will feature six 6.5-foot diameter beach balls suspended from the truss multiple times a day to mimic the natural wave in motion. Don’t miss those fantastic bouncy summer photo ops! The water theme continues in Aqua Cirque, an H20-themed circus show featuring a small but heroic seahorse and a gang of mystical creatures, from dancing jellyfish to mermaid aerialists. Stick around after the show to learn basic tricks such as juggling, hula hooping, basic acro and more. This year, naval enthusiasts can enjoy a special treat: the legendary HMCS Oriole will be sailing into Toronto for the first time in 25 years! The sail-training vessel was launched nearly 100 years ago, making it the oldest commissioned vessel in the Navy.

Le festival qui avait accueilli le plus grand canard en caoutchouc du monde est de retour avec une autre installation gonflable et plus grande que nature! La grande pièce cinétique appelée HTO Pendulum Wave comprend des ballons de plage de 6,5 pieds de diamètre suspendus à une charpente et bercés à longueur de journée par une vague au mouvement de balancier. Ne manquez pas la chance de vous photographier au milieu de ces ballons rebondissants! Aqua Cirque reprend le thème de l’eau dans un spectacle de cirque H2O mettant en vedette un petit hippocampe héroïque et un groupe de créatures mystiques qui vont des méduses aux sirènes acrobatiques. Après le spectacle, apprenez quelques tours de base de jonglerie, de hula hoop, d’acrobatie et plus. Cette année, les adeptes de navigation auront droit à une attraction spéciale : le légendaire ketch HMCS Oriole sillonnera les eaux de Toronto pour la première fois depuis 25 ans! Mis à l’eau il y a près de 100 ans, le navire-école est le plus ancien en service dans la marine.

The 2018 Dora Mavor Moore Awards
Just announced: the Doras are going gender-neutral! Starting in June 2019, The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts will eliminate all binary male and female designations in the performance categories, replacing them with a single “Outstanding Performance” for each division. This year’s ceremony will take place on Monday, June 25 in the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, hosted by award-winning actor Astrid Van Wieren. The multi-talented Emmy, Gemini and Dora-nominated Diane Flacks will pen the celebratory evening for her third year in a row while acclaimed theatre director, actor and writer Ed Roy takes the helm as director for the sixth time. Multi-award-winning lighting and production designer Andrea Lundy also returns for her 17th consecutive year. Check out the full list of nominees here.

À partir de juin 2019, la Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts éliminera des catégories d’interprétation toutes désignations binaires masculines et féminines pour les remplacer simplement par le titre « Interprétation exceptionnelle ». Cette année, le gala aura lieu le lundi 25 juin dans l’historique Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre et sera animé par la comédienne primée Astrid Van Wieren. Pour la troisième année de suite, la rédaction des textes est confiée à Diane Flacks, artiste aux talents variés et finalistes aux prix Emmy, Gemini et Dora. C’est Ed Roy, metteur en scène, comédien et auteur, qui dirigera le tout pour la sixième fois.
