Reel Asian 25th Anniversary Legacy Program
This application is for the “Reel Asian 25th Anniversary Legacy Program”, taking place November 1o to 9, 2021 in Toronto. A six-month film screening series will also run from October 2021 to March 2022. Organizers aim to present the majority of the ticketed programming digitally with the goal of attracting a national audience, and, depending on the state of the pandemic and the rules governing public gatherings, host an in-person screening and talkback in Toronto as well. Programming will include: (1) Canadian Spotlight retrospective featuring Governor General award-winning filmmaker Ali Kazimi and his body of work, and archive-specific programming that includes revisiting historic and meaningful projects such as the multidisciplinary arts festival Desh Pardesh (1988–2001), and archive film screenings. The tentative schedule includes two film screenings, an artist talk with Ali Kazimi, a digital installation of Kazimi’s other media work, and an industry masterclass during the November Festival. Film considerations include Shooting Indians, Random Acts of Legacy, and potentially a new film called Eva’s Dream that is currently in post-production; (2) a six-month-long film screening series (October 2021 to March 2022) featuring a unique film or program of short films by Asian Canadian filmmakers, in partnership with an international film festival or media arts organization. Some films in consideration include Out of the Blue by Richard Fung, Strawberry Fields by Rea Tajiri, Suite Suite Chinatown by Aram Collier, Continuous Journey by Ali Kazimi, and a curated shorts program; (3) standard programming including: 25th Anniversary Festival Launch Opening Night Film, “So You Think You Can Pitch?” competition, Awards Ceremony, Reel Ideas Conference, Festival Bootcamp, and “Wee Asian” short film screenings; and (4) year-round programming: (i) Asian Heritage Month in May including fundraiser screenings; (ii) monthly “What’s Brewing” networking events; and (iii) “Backstory”, Reel Asian’s podcast.
