Le Musée royal de l’Ontario (ROM) compte parmi les grands musées internationaux consacrés à l’histoire naturelle et aux cultures du monde. Musée universel voué aux civilisations et à l’histoire naturelle, le ROM propose une gamme de savoirs hors du commun aux visiteurs venant du monde entier. L’interdépendance de la nature et de l’humanité est plus que jamais comprise, et les collections et les programmes du ROM offrent de nombreux exemples des liens fondamentaux qui les unissent. Treasures of a Desert Kingdom: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India

“Treasures of a Desert Kingdom: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India” is a new exhibition taking place in Toronto March 9 to September 2, 2019. Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in collaboration with the Mehrangarh Museum Trust of Jodhpur, this exhibition featuring over 250 paintings, decorative arts, tents, canopies, carpets, textiles, jewellery and weapons, will only be shown in three North American cities, with the ROM being the only Canadian stop. Exploring a period from the 16th century until independence from British colonial rule in 1947, the exhibition will have three central themes: interconnections (between palace and town, urban and rural, central empire and subsidiary satellite kingdoms); the role of women and artisans; and royal patronage and the continuity of tradition. Public programs to be developed in conjunction with the exhibition include: (1) a themed lecture series (Ancient Patterns, Modern Art: Indian Jewellery Design, South Asian Women Today (in celebration of International Women’s Day), In-Conversation event with an international South Asian chefe engaging issues; (2) daytime lectures and free, community-based lectures; (3) full-day adult workshops (History of the Blue City, An Introduction to the Marwar School of Painting, Introduction to Gemmology); (4) “Baby & Me” programming; (5) a variety of children’s programs, including “Saturday Club”, “ROMKids Day Camps”, “ROMKids Junior”, and “Summer Club”; (6) an exhibition-themed “Friday Night Live” (Bollywood Beats); (7) exhibition-themed family activities planned throughout March Break; (8) a South Asian cultural showcase during the summer; and (9) free programming on the ROM’s new outdoor performance terrace showcasing South Asian music and dance.
