Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival
The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival is a unique showcase of contemporary Asian cinema and work from the Asian diaspora. Works include films and videos by East, South and Southeast Asian artist in Canada, the U.S., Asia and all over the world. As Canada's largest Asian film festival, Reel Asian® provides a public forum for Asian media artists and their work, and fuels the growing appreciation for Asian cinema in Canada. Founded in 1997 by producer Anita Lee and journalist Andrew Sun, this non-profit community-based festival has grown into an eagerly anticipated annual event that attracts thousands of attendees to 6 exciting days of galas, screenings, forums, workshops and parties.

2018 Reel Asian Film Festival with Strategic Outreach Enhancement
This application is for the “2018 Reel Asian Strategic and Outreach Enhancement Program”, taking place November 8 to 17, 2018 in various venues in Toronto. The proposed project includes three key components: (1) Addition of a Keynote Speaker Event to Reel Ideas Industry Series.The event will feature a prominent figure in the Asian Canadian or Asian American media landscape. Examples of potential speakers include Alan Yang, producer of Master of None, Constance Wu, actress from Fresh Off the Boat, Russell Peters, acclaimed comedian and actor. The proposed venue for the event is the CBC Glenn Gould Studio; (2) Increasing the profile of filmmakers and/or industry guests in attendance at the festival; and (3) Establishing a national social media short film contest to engage out of town audiences. Entitled “Tell Your Reel Story,” the contest intends to attract audience members across Canada to submit a 30-60 second short film documenting their personal encounters with Asian culture or telling stories about their Asian Canadian experience. The best submissions will have a staggered release in October on Reel Asian’s social media platforms. Reel Asian will also provide a hotel package for the winner of the contest to attend the festival and document his or her journey on social media and the Festival’s blog. Other enhancements include: consolidation of all industry related events and panels into a one day conference during the Festival; enhancement of the Festival’s membership program; the development of hotel packages with guest and hospitality partners to attract out of town audience members and industry delegates; and additional programming at “The Commons” at the 401 Richmond building, a shared space that includes a shared exhibition/screening room, a shared boardroom and a shared research centre.
