Talk Is Free Theatre is based in Barrie, Ontario. The company was founded in 2002 by Artistic Producer Arkady Spivak and since then has produced sixty productions. Our mission is to produce and to develop a wide range of ensemble-based programming, concentrating largely on new writing, rediscoveries of neglected work from the past and drastic re-examinations of classical repertoire.

Immersive Theatre: Sweeney Todd & Every Brilliant Thing
Project Description:
This application is for “Audience-Specific Art”, two new productions that will encourage audience participation, taking place in various locations in Barrie between September 12, 2018 and March 24, 2019. The two productions are: (1) Co-produced with Specifiq Theatre in London, England, “Sweeney Todd” will be a three-day immersive adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s contemporary musical, where the audience will be cast as characters in the play. In the course of the three-day long performance, some of the audience will travel from Barrie to London for the final day of the show. Each patron will be a “character” as part of this journey, and will be integrated into the story of Sweeney Todd. Patrons will adopt the characters of real people who might have lived in the period in which the story is set. All participants will be required to spend at least two days in Barrie prior to the trip to London. Barrie local partners will include Downtown BIA, Tourism Barrie, City of Barrie and many local businesses in hospitality sectors. There will be 20 performances in total and hospitality needs in London for all patrons will arranged for by the the Theatre; and (2) “Every Brilliant Thing”, Duncan MacMillan’s immersive play about a boy who grows up in the shadow of suicide. While one actor performs in the round. “Performing patrons” be asked to play various characters in the boy’s life. Each performance will be in a different location in Barrie (ranging from living rooms of 20 patrons to larger auditoriums of 400 seats).
